About Inner Therian & Frequently Asked Questions
Therianquiz.com is a free, respectful set of quizzes and guides for the therian and wider alterhuman community. Our goal is simple: offer a calm, judgment-free starting point for self-reflection — never gatekeeping, never mockery, and never treating anyone's identity as a phase.
What Is a Therian?
A therian (therianthrope) is someone who identifies as a real, earthly animal — such as a wolf, fox, or raven — on a deep, personal level. This identity is non-physical: every therian knows their body is human and that physical transformation isn't real. Being therian isn't a costume, a hobby, a religion, or roleplay — it's a felt part of who someone is.
How Do the Quizzes Work?
Each quiz asks you to rate statements on a simple agree-to-disagree scale. Your answers are weighted toward different results and shown instantly — as a ranked list (like the theriotype quiz) or a shareable chart (like the shifts quiz). Everything runs in your browser; we don't store your answers. A quiz can highlight patterns, but only you can truly know your identity.
Therian FAQ
What is a theriotype?
A theriotype is the specific real animal a therian identifies as. Browse them all on our theriotypes & glossary page, or take the What's My Theriotype? quiz.
What's the difference between a therian and a furry?
It comes down to identity versus hobby. A furry enjoys anthropomorphic animal characters as a creative fandom — something you do. A therian is their animal as part of their identity — something you are. The two communities overlap (plenty of people are both!), and neither has anything to do with harming animals. We never frame one as "fake."
Therian vs. otherkin vs. otherhearted?
Therians identify as real animals. Otherkin identify as mythical or fictional beings (like dragons or elves). The otherhearted feel a deep kinship with an animal without identifying as one. All fall under the alterhuman umbrella. Not sure where you fit? Try the Therian, Otherkin or Otherhearted? quiz.
What is "awakening"?
Awakening is the process of realizing and accepting that you're a therian. It often happens through introspection, dreams, and reflection — and there's no timeline or "right" way to do it.
What are shifts?
Shifts are temporary, non-physical experiences of feeling more like your theriotype — including mental, phantom, sensory, dream, and astral shifts. Learn about each on our shifts guide & quiz. Note: physical shifting is not real, and anyone claiming to teach it (especially for money) is running a scam — see our safety page.
Is being a therian a mental illness?
No. Therianthropy is an identity, not a disorder, and it is not a recognized psychiatric condition. Many clinicians describe it as part of normal identity development. If your identity ever causes you significant distress, that distress (not the identity itself) is what's worth talking to a supportive professional about.
What is the theta-delta (ΘΔ) symbol?
The interwoven Greek letters theta and delta are the community's symbol, created on The Werelist forums around 2003. The delta represents change and the fluid nature of the shift.
Spiritual or psychological — which is "correct"?
Both. The community holds spiritual and psychological explanations as equally valid, and many people are content not knowing the cause at all. We treat every framing with respect.
